After a long day of touring York...found this little pizza bar and enjoyed the Pepperoni Pizza and the Blonde Pizza....excellent food in this little quirky bar.  And Live music every night!

Real ale and good pizza, what more could you want? I think this is a really great concept. At the front there is the bar with a huge range of beer and from what I can see you can order pub snack type of food at the bar, e.g. pork pies and suchlike. Further at the back is where the pizzas are being made and served.

They had some really nice and reasonably priced beers on. They also had a board with the beers and prices which I always like. I chose half a porter which I have forgotten the name of and then it was pizza time.

We wanted one that was called American something and had pulled pork on it but were told the pork had run out. They offered to replace with chicken/ham/bacon but that didn't sound as appealing so our second choice was a ham and pineapple as I appear to have come full circle and now love pineapple as a pizza topping again. This was £7.50 for a decent size pizza and was really tasty, though maybe a bit too saucy. I'm not sure I would come here specifically for pizza, but I imagine it's a good place to meet with a group of friends. I would definitely come back for beer and would probably end up ordering pizza, if that makes any sense.

Ok this Osset Brewery owned pub may not be the most traditional looking pub but The Hop certainly delivered!

They specialise in pizza and it's rather good pizza too. Beer wise...half the beers are from their own brewery naturally. I've always enjoyed their beers so you cannot go  far wrong. On this occasion I had their White Rat, although because the clip was different from their usual design I didn't realise it was one of theirs. It was a very good pale ale!

Down an interesting street in York, it is certainly worth a visit.

SO after a wee meal locally a group of friendly lassies said - get yourself down here. SO I did. When I arrived the open mike session was one and what an unbeatable evening for a Sunday night. on entry there a loooooonnng bar with a spoiled for choice selection of local ales, international beers and great looking gantry - oh be still my beating heart (or was that liver!).

The locale party posse were waiting and being on my own on a business trip these folks went way beyond with the welcome. Then to the tunes. Acapelo mix of old classics, modern moddy things that I'd never heard of and the artistes played their own original material too.

Great music, fantastic people and huge range of beers. What's not to like!

Oh and apparently if you turn up at a reasonable time, they do food too! Once I return to try the latter, I'm sure there will be a five.

I am not quite sure what to make of The Hop. I have been there a few times now and was never really disappointed. The guys at the bar are exceptionally nice and and they have a good variety of beer. Something that I never think about when I am not there but definitely notice when I am, is the division half pub/half auditorium, which just keeps me from being comfortable. The pub area in the front is by far not big enough and is more of a place for spectators who watch the people sitting in the lower area eating food. I can't really feel happy sitting down in either of these places and only ever get comfortable after the 3rd or so pint.
The whole arrangement however does completely work if you are there for the music. It is not just because they change the weird lighting in the lower area, but also because the whole establishment changes its focus to the actual performance on stage. Without it, it is just people waiting for something to happen.
These are such minor things but just put me off every time. Apart from that the food is great and the beer is good. Worth a try!
